In mid-April 2022, KwaZulu-Natal experienced one of the most devastating natural disasters in its history. Between April 11 and 13, relentless rainfall triggered widespread flooding and landslides, leading to the tragic loss of 448 lives. Over 40,000 people were displaced, while more than 12,000 homes were destroyed. Entire communities were left reeling as schools, healthcare centers, and vital infrastructure were severely damaged.
The coastal village of Umdloti was hit particularly hard, suffering unimaginable destruction. Forty-three homes, along with roads, water supplies, electricity, and sewer systems, were washed away in the deluge. The impact was so profound that on April 18, South Africa’s President declared a National State of Disaster, setting the stage for emergency aid and recovery efforts. In the wake of such heartache, a special memorial has been created — the whale seat lookout. This scenic spot was built in remembrance of the disaster, a place for reflection, healing, and hope for the future. It stands as a testament to the strength and perseverance of the affected communities, who, despite the adversity, have shown remarkable resilience. The whale seat lookout, generously donated by Leomat and Rho-Tech, is more than just a scenic attraction. It symbolizes the unity and compassion of those who came together during a time of great need. For locals and visitors alike, this beautiful structure serves as a quiet reminder of both the tragic losses and the incredible spirit that followed. As we visit this site, may we remember not only the lives lost but also the enduring strength of those who continue to rebuild and thrive in the aftermath. |
